Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer
Friday, August 31st, 2007
Meet Cesar Millan, known as the Dog Whisperer. Cesar is the star of the Emmy nominated show by the same name which is shown on the National Geographic channel. He has the uncanny ability of truly communicating with the dogs to help them with behavior, training and beleive it or not, some true doggie emotional issues. For those of you who have seen Mr. Millan, it is a gift to watch him work with the dogs. For those who have not seen his show, try to catch an episode or two as it is inspiring to watch this man. I know people who are not even fans of dogs (can you imagine?) who are awestruck by his ability to relate to all different types of canines.
Mr. Millan has great advice and some of the information I came across would appear to be common sense, but they are all things that I think dog owners and potential dog owners need to be reminded of.
In an article titled “5 Things You Need To Know About Your Dog”,
Mr. Millan states the following:
1. Dogs are not people. Paraphrasing Mr. Millan, dogs don’t get impressed by any of the things that people are impressed by. So buying your pooch fancy duds and collars, or driving them around in a sports car does not make them feel any better about themselves the way we humans do.
2. Affection at the wrong time can make your dog more fearful and uneasy if you coddle them when they are nervous, frightented, anxious or aggressive. The dog is not comforted by this, but rather it reinforces negative behavior.
3. Dogs “see” the world with their nose, eyes and finally their ears, so just telling a pooch whom you don’t know that you are a friend may harm the future relationship. Let the dog get to know you on his/her terms, by experiencing your scent rather than looking the dog directly in the eyes, which can be interepreted by the dog as threatening or aggressive.
4. Breed is not destiny. Blaming bad behaviors on the breed of a dog is a cop out and is similar to human stereotyping. Find a dog that matches your lifestyle and train him/her well with proper socialization, and the dog will be the friend for life you have dreamed about!
5. Dogs need leadership. Dogs are pack animals and want their pack leaders(owners) to be strong and stable. This helps prevent bad behaviors and high anxiety levels in dogs. Remember accoding to the Dog Whisperer, the guideline should be “exercise, discipline and then affection”.
Thanks again to Cesar Millan for these words of wisdom and check out all of his great info available from my blog roll.
