A tribute to Mickey!!!
I can’t think of anything more difficult than the loss of a loved one and that includes the dog that is also part of your family. And the only thing that can be worse than that loss is losing that loved one at this time of the year. The emotions of that loss will always be etched in the memories surrounding the holidays. Years may pass and yet, when this time of year comes around, even though there may be joy and happiness, the sting of that loss will always be there.
The people I work with are wonderful loving people and we are all very close to one another. We know family members’ names and that includes the 4 legged members. We hear about and share the difficult times that we all experience. Hearing about the loss one of my co-workers experienced on Christmas Eve this year was tragic and my heart goes out to her and her family at this difficult time.
Kim was off of work on Wednesday, Christmas Eve, as this is when her family celebrates Christmas. It was a rainy and murky day in the northeast. As Kim was gathering her family to make the trip to spend the evening with her mother, they tried to locate Mickey, their 9 year old collie. Mickey, only goes outside behind Kim’s house in a fenced in pasture, but for some reason, they couldn’t find him. A car drove up the driveway and it was the parent of one of Kim’s daughter’s friends. She was very upset, as she hit a dog and it was in the driveway next door. When they found the dog, they saw it was Mickey and all the calmness and happiness of the impending holiday evaporated and was replaced by hysteria and disbelief. Mickey was very hurt, but alive. They took him to the emergency vet but sadly, they couldn’t save Mickey.
When I spoke with Kim on Christmas Day, she was still in a state of shock, but obviously reeling from the emotions of this loss. She didn’t understand why this happened as Mickey had never gone near the road. It is one of those things that none of us will ever be able to explain. This is when we have to celebrate the life of the dog in the hopes of helping us grieve through the loss. There will be a hole in the hearts of Kim and her children for a long time to come. Mickey was theirs and he was family. He will be sorely missed in death, but he was truly loved in life. Rest in peace, Mickey.
