Breed Spotlight.. Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire Terriers, named after an English county where they originated, are more commonly refered to as “Yorkies”. These small dogs are spunky and spirited. They are usually confident and unaware of their small size. Their curiosity and disregard for their own size makes for an excellent watch dog. They are also very loving, especially towards their masters, but distrustful of strangers.

yorkie_3.bmpYorkies are sensitive to cold weather which makes them great indoor dogs, even in small apartments or homes lacking a yard. The typical Yorkie weighs between five and seven pounds, and their coat is silky and fine. They make excellent lap dogs, but don’t usually do so well in homes with children.

What’s Your Dog Personality?

The most important thing to consider before you buy or adopt a dog is your own lifestyle. Finding the right dog means deciding what you want out of your relationship with your pet and choosing a breed that suits you. There are tons of breeds out there, each with its own special mix of size, temperament, energy level, etc.

A few things to consider:
Grooming – do you have time and/or money to groom your dog regularly?

Energy Level – how active are you? Can you keep up with a high-energy breed?

Children – how will your new family member get along with the kids?

Size – is your living quarters large enough for a big dog?

Now.. some breed characteristics:
Low energy dogs - Boston Terrier, Pekingese, Basset Hound, Bulldog

High energy dogs - Foxhound, Collie, Irish Setter, Weimaraner

Mild-tempered dogs - Beagle, Bichon Frise, Papillon, Shih Tzu, Golden Retriever, Lab

Low-shedding dogs - Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier, Bichon Frise, Schnauzer

The AKC (American Kennel Club) recently announced their list of the most popular breeds for 2006. Here’s the top ten:

1. Labrador Retrievers
2. Yorkshire Terriers
3. German Shepherd
4. Golden Retrievers
5. Beagles
6. Dachshunds
7. Boxers
8. Poodles
9. Shih Tzu
10. Miniature Schnauzers
