Dangers for dogs during the holidays!!!
It is that festive time of year when people seem to be smiling more and treat each other with more kindness. It is also the time of the year when we are so busy with the preparations of the holidays, that our dogs get lost in the shuffle and we may forget what dangers there are for a dog in a home donned in Christmas regalia.
Keep your dog or puppy away from the ornaments and tinsel. While they may be sparkly and festive for us, they pose singnificant hazards for the pooch. If the ornaments break, the very slim pieces of glass of which the ornaments are made, can be virtually like razor blades if ingested by your dog. The tinsel can reek havoc in their digestive system, getting caught in their stomach and intestines. If you have to modify your home decorating to insure the health of your dog…do so!!!
Those poinsettias that look so beautiful can really cause your dog some damage if eaten. They would get mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting and diarrhea. Not a pleasant way to enjoy time with your dog during the holidays.
Many delicious holiday treats begin with old fashioned baking and some of that may include yeast and uncooked bread dough. If eaten by your dog, this can be deadly. The dough would continue to rise in the dog’s stomach creating conditions in your dog such as stomach distension, and yeast ingested by your dog can cause the production of ethanol which could lead to alcohol poisoning.
So during this very busy time, don’t forget about your friend, always underfoot with his/her tail wagging everytime you enter the room. He/She needs you to keep him/her safe. They depend on you…don’t let them down!!!
