Michael Vick in drug rehab!! (for a reduced sentence??)

On Monday, Michael Vick left a Virginia prison for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons minimum security facility in Levanworth, Kansas. He will be participating in a drug rehabilitation program that requires 500 hours and is usually spread over a six to twelve month period. Inmates in this program are in units that are separated from the general population. As a basis for entry into this program, Vick’s attorney Billy Martin says that “Mr. Vick hopes to participate in programs offered at that facility, including the Bureau of Prisons drug treatment program,” I think it is a clever ploy by Vick and his attorney to get a reduction in his 23 month prison sentence. Inmates who participate in this program can be granted up to 1 year early release on their original prison sentence. Vick tested positive for marajuana back in September following his guilty plea to federal dog fighting charges. He was on supervised release at the time. It almost sounds like too convenient a plan to me. Michael Vick, for all of the other labels put upon him, was never called or referred to as a drug addict, but now, when it can mean up to a year reduction in his prison sentence, he suddenly requires drug rehab. Give me a break. I just wonder how many individuals who are truly in need of such a program have been placed a little lower on the list, because of the need to get Mike Vick in their as soon as possible. For all we know, this could have been a well laid out plan from the beginning of his arrest and plea arrangement.
If the NFL discontinues his suspension, Vick could be out earlier enough to play in the 2009 football season. Hmmmm….will those dogs he tortured and killed ever get a second chance at life? I think not. How about the dogs that had to be placed in shelters and sanctuaries. Many of them will never be able to be adopted because of the treatment they received at Bad Newz Kennels.
