More on the Recall Craze
Last night I was browsing some dog forums (I know - what a nerdy thing to do) and I came across several postings about more pet food being recalled. Of course, I checked the FDA website to confirm, and sure enough – MORE FOOD RECALLS!
There are several brands of treats being recalled, and none of them are associated with Menu Foods, the company from the original recall. I assume they all contain the same ingredient that has been the culprit before – contaminated wheat gluten.
At this point, I thought of my mom’s two dogs, Ellie Mae and Lucy. They eat about forty-five jerky treats a day, Ol’Roy brand. I thought I would look and make sure those were not on the recall list, and wouldn’t you know, as I scrolled down, there they were – Ol’Roy beef jerky strips! So I jumped up, grabbed the phone, and called my Mom. She was concerned that this information had not been on the news, but thankful that I happened to come across it. Needless to say, she threw the treats away immediately! Hopefully this recall is just a precautionary measure and maybe the treats aren’t contaminated. Loads of people shop at Wal-Mart, so I’m sure there are millions of dogs who have consumed those snacks.
Let’s just hope that something good comes out of this mess, like pet-owners educating themselves about what’s in the food. I’ve been experimenting with home-cooked dog food lately, but my dogs have been eating Wellness for some time now. A while back I did some research on common dog food ingredients and didn’t like what I found. Wellness appealed to me because it’s organic. I would encourage all dog owners to do the same – research what you’re feeding your precious puppy dogs!
