Some great news to start the year!!!

I wanted to let you all know of some great news I received recently. Many of you have read about the efforts of Iams Pet Food and the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter. Their project, the Iams Home for the Holidays Pet Adoption Drive set a goal for this year of 1,000,000 pets to be placed by adoption in forever homes. I recently received information that the adoption drive was a great success and that the total number of placements in forever homes from October 1, 2008 - January 5, 2009 topped out at 1,880,506 adoptions!!! Great results for a wonderful cause. Let’s hope next year’s efforts are even better.
On another happy note, let me tell you about a recent puppy rescue in Plum Borough, Pennsylvania. The Palombo family had gotten a Shih Tzu puppy for Christmas. The puppy, curious as most are, got outside and tragically fell down a well. The Polombos were beside themselves with anguish, but called 911 and got the local fire departments out to help them save the puppy. The fate of Romeo was in the hands of these wonderful firefighters. They decided to try something a bit unconventional, but necessity is the mother of invention. They took an industrial sized vacuum and sized the vacuum pipe down to about an inch and got it secured around one of the puppy’s little legs. There was enough suction to get little Romeo out, but when he was retrieved the dog was unconscious. The firefighters performed mouth to snout resuscitation to get the dog breathing again and low and behold, Romeo came back to life!!!! To check out the entire video of Romeo’s rescue, click here!!!
