Some great updates and some sad news!!!
About three days ago, I told you about the efforts of Iams Home4theHolidays program. This program sponsored by Iams and the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter who are working with shelter and rescue organizations all over the country to reach a goal of 1,000,000 animals placed in loving homes by 1/5/09. As a result of my entry, I received notification that as of 12/18/08 the number of animals placed in forever homes has reached 869,870!!!! What a wonder effort and program!!!
On another note, I wanted to let you know about a story that isn’t so wonderful. I usually like to keep this blog positive, but sometimes it’s necessary to write about the horrible things in the hopes that it will bring about change. The next is one such story.
In Ashland City, Tennessee, police and animal control officers went to a home that where the owner had been evicted. However, when the owner left, he never took his dogs with him. He just left them there to die and that is what happened to several of the dogs. Twelve pit bulls were found both inside and outside the home and officials believe that the former owner, Stoney McMinnis had been using the dogs in a dogfighting ring. Evidence of this was found on the dogs themselves by injuries that would have only happened as a result of the fighting. They found small puppies that were severely malnourished and nine living dogs and the remains of three.
This is a horrible tragedy and lets hope it is not too late for these dogs to be re-trained, deprogrammed and perhaps become adoptable family pets. Sometimes that isn’t always the case. Stoney McMinnis has been arrested for his treatment of the animals, but something tells me the punishment will never be enough for what those animals actually suffered.
