Watch for peanut products!!!

PetSmart, putting pet safety first!!!
It appears that the recent salmonella scare in peanut butter and peanut butter paste products has now extended into dog products
Pet Smart is one of the nation’s top pet retail establishment. On Friday, January 23rd, they issued a voluntary recall of many of their dog biscuit related products because of potential salmonella contamination. See their statement below:
“Update - January 23, 2009
Carolina Prime, one of our dog treat vendors, is conducting a voluntary recall of four of its peanut butter treat products after confirming that the product contains ingredients linked to the salmonella investigation announced by the FDA in mid-January. This recall affects all PetSmart stores in the U.S. and Canada.
While these products are being recalled as a precautionary measure, we’re immediately removing the product from our stores (note: this product is not sold online at petsmart.com).
These products are in addition to the voluntary recall of seven Grreat Choice dog biscuit products announced on January 20 and one Salix dog treat product announced on January 22. ” On their site you can obtain more detailed information regarding the specific products related to this recall. Salmonella is a bacteria that is found in raw meat, poultry and eggs. It can also be found in the feces of certain animals. The bacteria can easily be spread from one of these sources to other products or to humans and dogs.
In most healthy dogs, salmonella poisoning will cause flu like symptoms and make the dog very uncomfortable. However, in older, weaker dogs, it can actually be life threatening. There are products that are not pet related that are being recalled as well. So prior to giving your dog any product with peanut butter or peanut butter paste, insure that it is safe and not subject to the recall of these many products. For more information, see the Food and Drug Administration website at www.fda.gov. I applaud Pet Smart for their proactive approach to this problem and it is nice to see that their overall concern for the pets they serve is greater than their concern for product sales!
